Bart De Wever (21 December 1970) is a trained historian and was connected to the KU Leuven as a scientific researcher for a while. In 2004, he was elected a Member of the Flemish Parliament and also became Party Chairman shortly afterwards. He successfully participated in the negotiations on forming a Flemish Government.
In 2006, De Wever was elected a councillor of the Antwerp Municipal Council. In 2007 he moved from the Flemish Parliament to the federal Chamber of Representatives. He led the N-VA delegation in the 2007 federal government negotiations, although unsuccessfully this time.
In 2009 and 2010, he led the N-VA to two successive spectacular electoral victories and turned the N-VA into the largest party in Flanders and even in Belgium. He is currently a Member of the Flemish Parliament and of the Senate, as a Community Senator.
During the last elections, in 2010, he personally received 785,776 preferential votes, something only a few politicians before him have managed.
