Action in memory of murdered Yuriy Volkov in Moscow

The non-sanctioned action dedicated to the memory of “Spartak Moscow” supporter Yuriy Volkov who was killed in the late evening July 10, 2010 took place in the evening of July 14, 2010 in the center of Moscow near “Chistye Proudy” subway station. Nearly 300-500 football supporters participated in this action and demanded objective investigation of the crime.

Since 9:30PM the organized groups of football supporters started to appear near vestibule of “Chistye Proudy” subway station. People carrying candles and flowers surrounded the place where 23 years old Yuriy Volkov had been fatally injured. Some people keeping total silence distributed leaflets with description of the circumstances of the crime.
In particular, the leaflets contained information that three natives of Chechnya had been detained on suspicion of armed attack on Yuriy Volkov and his friends but two of them were later released under written cognizance not to leave. The leaflet also contained the contact information of case investigator.

The policy was undoubtedly not prepared to collection of such amount of people. The first buses with OMON (police forces of special purpose) appeared only in half hour after the beginning of action. However, the interference of the police was not necessary as the participants behaved quiet, did not cry out the slogans and display the banners. By 10:30PM the supporters began to leave the place. Some of the supporters groups were escorted to the entrance of the subway station by police which, obviously, was afraid of potential incidents.

Yuriy Volkov was murdered in the late evening of July 14, 2010, two of his friends were brought to the hospital with knife wounds. In accordance with their information, one of Yuriy Volkov’s friends had occasionally collided with one of the natives of Chechnya and that fact became the reason of further conflict.
